Tensions flared at the Senate Impeachment Court as defense lawyers confronted the key prosecution witness during cross-examination. National Bureau of Investigation agent John Mark Calilung defended his forensic findings on alleged grave threats.
He authenticated digital evidence involving Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and top officials. Meanwhile, Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero maintained order as opposing legal counsels argued over strict questioning procedures.

Defense attorney Carlo Narvasa demanded that the witness limit his responses strictly to yes or no. Prosecutor Amando Virgil Ligutan objected, stating ‘nothing in our rules’ allows constraining a witness during cross-examination.

Consequently, Senate President Escudero overruled the objection because Agent Calilung was experienced enough to respond properly.
Subsequently, defense lawyers questioned the NBI investigation affidavits submitted to the Department of Justice.

Agent Calilung explained that investigators submitted a revised affidavit to comply with specific prosecutorial requirements.
In addition, former NBI Director Jaime Santiago forwarded a February letter confirming ‘attached herein is the revised affidavit’. Furthermore, Narvasa asked if President Marcos filed a personal criminal complaint against the Vice President.
In response, Calilung stated that he had ‘no personal knowledge’ regarding individual filings by the chief executive.
Narvasa noted that the President holds executive authority over both the justice department and the NBI. However, the defense attorney quickly withdrew his statement following immediate objections from the prosecution panel.
