President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday pushed for the passage of a measure that would make the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program mandatory for senior high school students.
In his speech during the closing ceremony for the first Presidential Silent Drill Competition held at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila City, Duterte stressed the importance of ROTC in instilling discipline among the youth.
“I suggest that we pass the ROTC (bill). Sumali kayo. Requirement yan bago ka maka-graduate. Tiisin mo yan kasi yan talaga ang buhay dapat ng estudyante ng Pilipinas,” the President said.
“Kapag dumaan kayo ng ROTC, meron kayong respect of authority, echelon, as it foes higher and discipline. Yung mga bata na ayaw, hayaan niyo yan. They will always be a time for accounting in this country,” he added.
In 2002, the ROTC was made optional following the controversial death of Mark Chua, a University of Santo Tomas student who was allegedly slain after he exposed the alleged irregularities in the military training.
